It is becoming increasingly popular in Poland to spend the long May weekend… not necessarily on the Vistula River, but abroad in our country. One of the most popular destinations for spring (and not only) holidays remains Spain. This is also evidenced by data on flights from Poland to the Iberian Peninsula.
Poles choose Spain
In April, Chopin Airport summarised Q1 2024.The capital’s airport checked in a total of 1.52 million passengers in March (+13% compared to March in the record year 2019) and 4.3 million in Q1 as a whole (+16% compared to Q1 2019). In scheduled traffic, according to Polskie Porty Lotnicze, passengers were most likely to travel to Spain, Germany and the UK.
Spain also leads the way in terms of charter traffic – it is among the three most popular destinations for departures from Chopin Airport – alongside Egypt and Thailand. This is in line with record-breaking results – as it is estimated that the capital’s airport will check in 2024. 20.5 million passengers, some 10% more than last year. It will thus break the barrier of 20 million people checked in in 12 months for the first time in its 90-year history.
Long May weekend in Spain
It is to be expected that interest in travel to Spain will continue to grow in the coming months. There are several factors that may influence the decision of Poles to travel to the Iberian Peninsula – instead of the Mazury Lake District or the Baltic Sea. This is because Spain guarantees warmer and sunnier weather. Many people are looking for a place for May Day (and beyond) where they can enjoy the sun and pleasant temperatures outdoors. Hence the decision to go to the Costa del Sol, or the sunshine coast.
A trip to the Iberian Peninsula can be a chance to discover new cultures, landscapes and taste new experiences, as well as an exceptional holiday in luxury hotels. From historic landmarks to beautiful beaches, Spain offers a variety of attractions, attracting travellers from all over the world. The cuisine and culture are also not insignificant. Spain is famous for its rich culinary offerings and unique traditions, different in every region of the country.
The Spanish lifestyle simply has to be experienced! Travellers visiting Spain also emphasise the diversity of tourism on offer. The country has a wide range of leisure activities on offer – from sunbathing on the Mediterranean, to visiting historic cities, to active holidays in the mountains.
To Malaga, and from there straight to the sea
Spain has the advantage of efficient communication and great accessibility, also concerning many tourist attractions. Thanks to good infrastructure – including Malaga airport and convenient air connections – travelling to Spain is easy and convenient. The Spanish airport in 2023 broke all its previous records and handled 22 million passengers through its terminals. There is a new Relax & Go ‘quiet space’ available for tourists to read, listen to music or simply relax.
Today, Málaga is the fourth busiest airport in Spain, just behind Madrid, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca. Located just 8 km from the city centre, the airport is key to the entire region – serving all neighbouring towns and cities on the Costa del Sol. It is worth mentioning that it only takes 10 minutes to travel to Torremolinos, 15 minutes to Benalmadena, 20 minutes to Fuengirola and around 30 minutes to Marbella.
