Sea with mountain view
Southern sunshine, dozens of wide sandy beaches, and stunning mountain views from the crystal clear waters – there is no better place for water sports than Marbella. The city has been a mecca for their devotees since the 1950s, and today is considered the most luxurious resort in Andalusia. Here, tourists have almost 30 km of beaches at their disposal, and dozens of sports clubs are just waiting for those willing to develop their skills at all levels.
Where to swim?
Sports clubs offering boat hire and lessons are located in the main harbours of the city, where the boats of locals, as well as sailors coming to Marbella from all over the world, dock. You will find many yacht clubs in the Deportivo harbour (Puerto Deportivo de Marbella), located in the central part of the city. Here you can hire a motorboat, jet-ski (around €100/hour) or book a place on an organised yacht cruise, such as at Marbella Sports Boat. From here, you will also head out to sea to experience deep-sea diving, as offered by Simply Diving. The nearby Playa de Venus beach, although small, also has good facilities for water sports.
Fans of all types of surf, however, often choose a different location. Just 10 minutes by car west of the centre you will find yourself at Alicante beach. This begins a 3km stretch of Marbella’s sandy coastline, which has several beaches: including the popular Rio Real (Pinilo) and Bounty Beach. Plenty of activities await you here.
On the surface and underwater
Schools and sports clubs offer professional equipment hire and lessons in all varieties of surfing for both adults and children, starting with windsurfing (from €30/hour) and wakeboarding (from €15). Particularly fashionable lately is paddleboarding, which is paddling on a board (around €40/1.5 h lesson). You can even sign up for a group sunset trip, which is organised, for example, by NaluSur for €45/person.
Marbella is the ideal place to try wing foil – a new water sport that is a combination of kitesurfing, windsurfing and foilboarding. The cost of lessons for beginners is around €40/hour. The biggest dose of adrenaline, however, will bring you flyboarding. This special board rises up to 10 metres above the surface of the sea under high water pressure. Among recreational sports, this is one of the more expensive pastimes – it costs around 130 euros for just under an hour and is offered, for example, by Red Fly Marbella.
Examples of schools and equipment rentals (for those who do not need tuition):
For kayaking, on the other hand, the best place to go is around Istán Lake. You will pay from €60 for 2 hours of swimming with an instructor.
