Mountain excursion: La Concha

La Concha, or the shell, is a mountain that rises majestically above Marbella, providing it with a specific, friendly microclimate. From the summit we can admire Marbella, the sea and the African coast. Here you can also see what autumn looks like in the Spanish mountains!

Marbella is the starting point for many unforgettable trips – to the Sierra Nevada mountains, to El Chorro or to the El Caminito del Rey (King’s Path) ravine. It is impossible to be bored on the Costa del Sol, which is why so many people fall in love with Marbella and look for properties for sale in this part of Spain. And there is plenty to choose from: luxury flats on the hillside or beachside houses.

Microclimate in Marbella

La Concha protects the city from sudden changes in the weather. It is thanks to it that the inhabitants of Marbella enjoy a specific microclimate, helping to cure many illnesses. Looking at the majestic mountain from the coast, we may not realise that there is an entire mountain range stretching behind it – the Sierra Blanca.

Beautiful views

La Concha (1215 m) is part of the Sierra Blanca range, so named because of its white limestone slopes sparsely covered with vegetation. Discerning hikers can reach the summit of La Concha in just 2-3 h. The characteristics of this peak and the terrain around Marbella mean that, while climbing, it is possible to enjoy views of the sea and the green valleys and mountain ranges stretching inland. In October, it is possible to experience an autumnal aura in the mountains – unknown in evergreen Marbella. In late October and early November, edible chestnuts are harvested here! However, we do not recommend climbing La Concha in summer, as the climate on the Costa del Sol simply makes it too hot for this.

Refugio de Juanar hostel

One of the trails leading to La Concha starts at the Refugio de Juanar, located between Marbella and Ojén, where Charles de Gaulle wrote part of his memoirs. It is well worth a visit to the local restaurant where, during the hunting season, excellent game is served, such as deer in chestnuts.

Let’s hit the road!

The trail is well signposted, the path goes through the valley towards the summit of Cruz de Juanar, then climbs up and down again and again, so it is worth taking trekking poles with you. Great care must be taken when climbing, as you may be surprised by strong winds or sharp rocky approaches along the route – for example, when heading towards the cliff of El Salto del Lobo (Wolf’s Leap). More difficult passages and approaches with chains await us, so mountain experience will be useful. If you are new to climbing, it is much better and safer to hire a guide or join an organised group tour.

The hardships of climbing are definitely made up for by the breathtaking views: Costa del Sol in the south, Gibraltar and Tarifa in the south-west and, if the weather is good, the African coast. During the hike you can admire the diverse vegetation, ferns, olive trees, cherry trees, pine and fir trees or chestnut trees.
