Good to know: medical assistance in Marbella

There are times when you need medical assistance and advice from a doctor while on holiday or for a longer period of time in Spain. Are you wondering who to turn to and where to go for support? What is Spanish medical care like? Here are a few tried-and-tested addresses and information you should have written down just in case.

Certainly, when deciding to take a holiday to Andalusia or to move there, it is worth knowing where and to whom in Spain you can apply for help. It is worth noting that as part of our selected packages of services, offered by Agnes Inversiones, we organise medical assistance and support you with any related issues.

Emergency room: state hospitals

If you fall ill and have insurance, you can contact our insurance company who will arrange to see a doctor in Marbella. However, when you can’t wait, the best, albeit time-consuming, solution is to go to the emergency room (Urgencias) in one of the hospitals on the Costa del Sol. In this case, it is advisable to carry the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which can be obtained from the Social Security Office just before you travel. In the event of an emergency, Spanish private hospitals provide immediate assistance for which they will bill.

A 24-hour paediatric emergency service is also available in Marbella. The addresses of all the facilities where you can get help can be found on the Agencia Sanitaria Costa del Sol website.

Emergency room: private clinics

Quiron in Marbella offers a very efficient emergency service. However, if your insurance does not cover services in private facilities, you will need to pay upfront or leave a deposit. The clinic is modernly equipped and employs a number of specialists, including paediatricians. If your doctor orders further tests, these can be carried out on site.

Hospital Ochoa also offers an ER, but its facilities do not match those at Quiron. The hospital’s advantage, however, is its convenient access almost to the door. The hospital works with most private insurance companies, but does not offer a paediatric or gynaecological ER.

The private clinic Helicopteros Sanitarios allows you to request a home visit. By calling +34/ 952 811 818 you can order a doctor who will assess the patient’s condition on the spot, prescribe treatment or write a prescription. In more serious cases, where further diagnosis is required, the patient is taken to a state hospital.

Helicopteros Sanitarios also offers home visits by a paediatrician for children. You will pay for the consultation on the spot, after the examination. Residents can purchase a family subscription at an affordable price.
