Not just golf. See the tennis guide to Marbella

Marbella is distinguished by its mild Mediterranean climate, meaning warm winters and hot summers. This makes it easy to practice tennis all year round, in comfortable weather conditions. There are modern sports facilities in and around the city, offering excellent infrastructure. Where is it worth playing tennis?

Costa del Sol in a sporty way

The Spanish coast is famous for its excellent golfing conditions, and padel and tennis are also popular. A number of renowned tennis academies are available to locals and tourists. They offer professional training programmes, tailored to different levels. The academies employ experienced coaches who have worked with the world’s leading players.

Marbella attracts tennis players from all over the world, which creates an international training environment. This is a great opportunity to share experiences and learn from other players. The Costa del Sol is a popular tourist destination, which means there are plenty of activities to enjoy after training.

Tennis in Spain has a rich history, evolving from a pastime for the elite to a sport played and celebrated throughout the country. In the late 19th century, tennis was seen as a pastime for the wealthy. The post-World War II era, however, marked a significant change as tennis gained popularity across the country, laying the foundations for its current status as one of the national passions.

The mid-to-late 20th century was the golden era of Spanish tennis. This period saw the emergence of iconic players such as Manolo Santana, followed by Rafael Nadal, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario and Carlos Moyá. Their remarkable achievements not only brought them numerous titles, but also ignited a passion for tennis among Spaniards.

Along with the development of traditional tennis, another racket sport, padel, began to gain popularity in Spain. Launched in Mexico in the 1960s, it quickly found a fervent following in Spain. Today, it is a hybrid, combining elements of tennis and squash, played on a smaller court surrounded by walls.
