You don’t have to go on holiday to Dubai or Morocco to try traditional Arabic tea, coffee and sweets! Explore Grenada’s original attraction – the tea houses.
Go to Caldereria Nueva
After the full-day tour of Granada that we invited you to here, head to Caldereira Nueva. This is an unusual place where you will find not only tea shops at every turn, but also handicraft and souvenir shops. Take a look at the Kasbah, for example, where you can sample regional delicacies – aromatic teas, Arabic dishes, pancakes, sweets and baked goods.
What can’t be missing from Arabic tea? A lot of sugar. Tea is served at all times of the day, in small silver jugs, small glass cups or glass-like glasses. Tea is served with mint, but also with cinnamon or cardamom.
Do you know how Turkish-style coffee is brewed?
We say ‘Turkish-style coffee’, but this way of brewing coffee can be found on almost every corner in Bosnia, Greece or Armenia. The entire ceremony of preparing such coffee and serving it has been inscribed on UNESCO‘s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2015.
Coffee is traditionally served in two ways: qahwah saada, or bitter, with cardamom, with sweet dates, or with sweets, resembling hard jelly, dusted with powdered sugar. In special pots – small, tapered pots with a handle – coffee is boiled twice with water poured over it. Boiling water is then added and served, along with the pot and sweets on a small tray. The coffee is sipped from “thimbles” and nibbled with dates or traditional sweets. What, apart from cardamom, can be added to coffee? Saffron, cloves and even rose water!
